Global Postural Correction

Benefits:

Take a deep breath as you read this. Now, take a look at the posture you are in as you continue to read. You will probably notice that you are somewhat slouched over if you are sitting and hunched over if you are standing. Posture equals your form, how you hold yourself in any situation. And this form governs your function. Most human beings live with poor posture, or structural alignment. This necessarily translates to poor movement patterns. These postural habits and movement patterns lead to undue stress on your body. Postural imbalances originate very early in life young. A great example of this results from exceedingly sedentary lifestyles. The previous generation was labelled as a smoking one. Currently, our generation is known as the ‘sitting’ one.  These negative health effects are equally as dire in nature.

One of the many effects of prolonged sitting is that it effectively shuts down the diaphragm, the primary muscle of respiration.
When the diaphragm lacks full efficiency, the next chain of muscles that keep us stable and upright (hip flexor and gluteals) become inhibited and lack production.

Next, the results become rather tangled. Though we will still be able to move around from place to place, however, our body, enabled by our nervous system, thus develops compensatory methods of movement. These compensations are the proponents for negative strain on all the structures of your body.

Through the continued development of these negative, compensatory movements, we further use our muscles incorrectly. This leads to great weaknesses throughout the body.

An example of this lies with the weakness of  tissues that comprise our posterior chain (back, gluteals and hamstrings) this will lead to an overly tight front of the body (chest, abdominals, quadriceps). Lack of balance in this example directly drives these compensations.

Here is an easy test to see how position (posture) affects our ability to take a deep breath. Sitting upright, fully empty your lungs with a strong exhale. Next, keep your spine relaxed and long.

Take a slow, deep breath, pushing out the belly button as you inhale.

Appreciate the time it takes for the deep breath and any try to ignore any form of resistance.

Now exhale.

Next, try slouching forward as you sit and take a deep breath.

Now, fully exhale.

Notice anything different?

You probably noticed that as you slouched, you left very little room in your abdomen for your main breathing muscle (the diaphragm) to contract. Your breath has become laboured resulting in compensation; using other muscles in chest and neck to force your breath out. This inevitably leads to raw, sore and irritated trapezius and shoulder muscles, to name a few.

At the Aliyah Massage Therapy Centre, learn to incorporate proper static and movement patterns to ensure pain-free living. The process begins with a full body postural assessment, as well as a thorough assessment of your body in motion. The Aliyah therapist will create your treatment plan in which to promote the greatest postural efficiency, both structurally and functionally. Once the alignment is realized, your new movement patterns will be solidified with proper corrective exercises and stretching regimens.
